First Indian Hydrogen powered bus unveiled

India’s first hydrogen powered bus was unveiled at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) facility in Tamil Nadu. Tata Motors and ISRO joined hands in 2006 to design and develop these types of vehicles in India.

This hydrogen powered bus is basically a Tata Starbus with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) type using hydrogen bottles as fuel which is stored at the top of the bus. Tata Motors and ISRO developed the Fuel Cell Power System (FCPS) for the bus starting from 20KW to 120KW.

Concept of hydrogen powered vehicles is not new to the world, but it is a great achievement to the Indian automotive industry as Tata Motors and ISRO has come up with a near production model which is now under its trail runs.

Hydrogen powered buses uses an electrochemical device that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity and the vehicles running on this technology is two to three times fuel efficient than the conventional vehicles. The hydrogen powered vehicles are also completely environmental friendly.

“This is a significant stride for automobile industry for future transportation. In this vehicle there will be zero pollution since the product of cold combustion is water. This is a result of great team work of Tata Motors and ISRO specialists with contributions from DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) and PESO (Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organisation),” said Gnana Gandhi, technical team lead and honorary adviser, ISRO.
