Mahindra - A Look Back At The History

In 1945, Jagdeesh Chandra and Kailas Chandra (Mahindra brothers) together with their friend Gulam Muhammad started Mahindra & Mohammad Company, which used to build and sell American branded Willys Jeep under collaboration. In 1947 seventy five Jeeps where imported to India and assembled in their factory. During the same time when India and Pakistan were separated, Gulam Muhammad immigrated to Pakistan and became the first finance minister of independent Pakistan. This lead the way to the formation of the world famous brand automobile Mahindra & Mahindra.

Mahindra and Mahindra started manufacturing CJ 3B model. The Jeeps available in the starting where left hand drive. After five years almost all components where manufactured in India. The right hand drive model was introduced in 1968. The Jeeps were having only petrol engine in the starting and the company was having only this product. The maximum Jeeps produced by the company where brought by government organizations for various applications. The oil crisis in 1973 forced the company to introduce diesel engines. A variety of diesel engines were considered and at last the company introduced CJ 500 with diesel engine. The grand welcome given to diesel Jeep, made Mahindra & Mahindra to modernization of this new born baby. Various developments were made and in 1985 Mahindra & Mahindra introduced MM 540. In the early 90’s Mahindra & Mahindra introduced Commander which was having an extended wheel base and could accommodate 10 persons.

The decade of 1991 to 2000 was a time for change for Mahindra & Mahindra. Anand Mahindra, the present Chairman & Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra joined the company during this time. They then introduced a modernized version of their Commander and named it as Armada, fitted with AC, power steering and various other fittings. Marshal, Economy were also launched during the same time. This team was behind the development of Bolero based on the Armada platform with front independent suspension. This development then leads to the development of Scorpio in 2002.

The Scorpio was the first vehicle from Mahindra & Mahindra which was developed in India with international standards. The attractive design in both exteriors and interiors, its capable technical aspects together with its attractive pricing was the best achievement for Mahindra & Mahindra. In 2009 Mahindra & Mahindra added Xylo, a multi utility vehicle to its vehicle range and in 2012 a small sized Xylo named Quanto was launched.
