Review! Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai has launched its new Neo Fluidic Elantra in India a few months ago. Since then Elantra is making a tough competition in the market. The main reason behind this is the Hyundai’s new fluidic design language. The new Hyundai Elantra comes with a modern aesthetics which include strong and sharp slashes, interluding various surfaces etc. The interior design is also very striking.

The new Hyundai Elantra comes with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine is a 1.8Litre (1797cc) four cylinder, 16 valves configuration DOHC with dual VTVT and has multipoint injection which produces a maximum power of 149.5PS @ 6500rpm and maximum torque of 18.1kgm @ 4700rpm. The overall mileage is 9.5kmpl.

Diesel engine in Elantra is very common to us. It is the same 1.6Litre (1582cc) four cylinder, 16 valve configuration DIOHC with VGT and has common rail direct injection with a power output of 128PS @ 4000rpm and maximum torque output of 26.5kgm @ 1900-2750rpm producing an overall mileage of 13.5kmpl.

Neo Fluidic Elantra has two transmission options of 6-Speed manual and 6-Speed automatic. The automatic version as compared to the manual version is a very good option for the city drive. It has disc brakes at both front and rear, which also comes with McPherson strut type with coil spring suspension at the front and coupled torsion beam axle at the rear with gas type shock absorbers. Elantra is fitted with 205/60 R16 alloy wheels.

Compared to the competition, Elantra comes with more gizmos like reverse camera, steering mounted controls, Bluetooth connectivity with audio system, USB and auxiliary ports, seat coolers for the driver and co-driver and rest of the standard features. Elantra comes with almost everything one could wish.

Ergonomics are pretty much to spot on, all controls are placed exactly where you want it. Legroom is very good even for the rear passengers. It has a total length of 4530mm, width of 1775mm and height of 1470mm with a 2700mm wheelbase.

Safety features are also plenty in Elantra. It comes with dual front airbags, side and curtain airbags, ESP, ABS and EBD, rear parking sensors, impact sensing and speed sensing door locks, hill start assist control etc. It comes in six colours of coral white, sleek silver, bronze, phantom black, maharajah red, and twilight blue. It comes in total seven variants, three in petrol and four in diesel including automatic models.

The price range of Elantra starts at INR 1,270,817 for the base model Elantra petrol and goes upto INR 1,393,876 for high end model and INR 1,493,875 for automatic. While the base model of Elantra diesel is priced at INR 1,310,751, high end at INR 1,504,789 and automatic at INR 1,604,789.(All prices are ex-showroom New Delhi).

Hyundai Elantra is a tough competition to Volkswagen Jetta, Skoda Laura, Chevrolet Cruze, Toyota Corolla and Renault Fluence. Main reasons behind this are the surplus number of features in the car and the Hyundai’s network in India which makes them strong.
