How to prepare Besan Ka Dhokla

Dhokla is an Indian food which originates from Gujarat. It is made with a fermented batter of besan. It is severed as breakfast or as a snack. It is good for health since it is steamed. There is different method and ingredient (rice/besan/rawa) used to prepare dhokla. Even in Rajasthan dhoklas are famous which are prepared in different way.

Here is a simple besan dhokla preparation which is easy to prepare and takes less time.

Besan Ka Dhokla


  • 100 gms Besan
  • 1cup Curd
  • 1tsp Green Chilies and Ginger (paste)
  • Chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Few drops of Lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • Oil
  • Sugar and water

For Tampering

  • Oil
  • Mustard Seeds
  • Curry and Coriander (chopped)
  • Green chilies (chopped)


  1.     In a bowl, mix all ingredients – Besan, Curd, Green Chilies and Ginger (paste), Chilli powder, Salt, Lemon juice, turmeric powder well and make it a smooth batter (just like the way you do for dosa batter).t
  2.     Set it aside for 4-5 hours.
  3.     Grease the baking dish with oil and pour the batter in it.
  4.     Keep in the baking dish with batter in the cooker/steamer and steam it for 10-15mins.
  5.     Let it cool for sometime and cut the dhokla into cubes.
  6.     Now in a frying pan, tamper-heat oil, add mustard seeds, curry and coriander leaves, chillies.
  7.     Add this to dhokla.
  8.     Prepare a sugar syrup.

Dhokla is ready. You can serve dhokla with sugar syrup or green chutney.
