Rupee crashes to record low at 68.50 against US dollar

New Delhi, Aug 28: The Indian rupee on Wednesday reached to a record low of 68.50 against US dollar. On Tuesday's close, Rupee had touched 66.24.

Stock markets also fell sharply, with the 50-share Nifty benchmark trading below 5,150 levels having dropped around 170 points. The BSE Sensex dropped over 500 points.
Rupee has been sliding continuously despite continuous attempts by the government prevent it. Earlier, Finance Minister Chidambaram said government will stick to the fiscal deficit limit target set. He said this while announcing the approval of power and infrastructure projects worth INR 183,000 crore.
