We won't seek death penalty for Edward Snowden: US tells Russia

Washington, July 26: The US Justice department will not seek death penalty against Edward Snowden, the former National Security agency contractor who leaked classified documents to media. In a letter dated July 23, Attorney general Eric Holder told Russian government that Snowden will not face charges that will lead to death penalty. It will not seek death penalty to Snowden even if he was charged with additional charges that will lead to death penalty.
It was said that Snowden has filed temporary asylum papers to Russia on the stand that if he were returned to US, he will be tortured and would face death penalty. The attorney general's letter was sent to Alexander Vladimirovich Konovalov, the Russian minister of justice.
"I can report that the United States is prepared to provide to the Russian government the following assurances regarding the treatment Mr. Snowden would face upon return to the United States. The charges he faces do not carry that possibility, and the United States would not seek the death penalty even if Mr. Snowden were charged with additional death penalty-eligible crimes,” said the letter.
The holder of the letter assured that Snowden will be given all the rights of a US citizen apart from a fair trial. Holder also said, "we understand from press reports and prior conversations between our governments that Mr. Snowden believes that he is unable to travel out of Russia and must therefore take steps to legalize his status. That is not accurate; he is able to travel."
Edward Snowden, former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor had leaked US security secrets to the media. The document disclosed by him last month exposed large scale surveillance of phone and internet communication by NSA around the world. Presently he is in the transit area of Moscow airport.
