China shattered by earthquake; 72 dead, 600 injured

Beijing, April 20: A strong earth quake hit the southernwestern Sichuan province in China on Saturday. According to sources, 72 people have been dead and around 600 were injured.

According to local seismologists, the earth quake was registered at a magnitude of 7.0 while the US geological survey registered it as 6.6 magnitude. It was centred 50km (31 miles) west of the town of Linqiong.
"The earthquake in Ya'an, Lushan, has injured or killed hundreds of people," the Sichuan earthquake bureau said, according to an official government website.
In May 2008, an earth quake of magnitude 8.0 hit Sichuan area killing nearly 90,000 people.
