The girl’s male friend who was attacked along with her appeared before the court in a wheel chair. Charges of murder, gang-rape and kidnapping, among others, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been framed against the five accused while the sixth accused, a minor is being tried in the juvenile court.

The accused have also been charged with unnatural offence, destruction of evidence, attempt to murder, causing hurt while committing robbery, dacoity with murder, and common intent. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Asking the media not to address his daughter as a gang-rape victim, he said, "It hurts me. She should be called the country's brave daughter.". He added, "We have received Rs.15 lakh from the Delhi government, but the money cannot make up for our loss."

The trial started around 50 days after the incident occurred. The 23-year-old girl, a physiotherapy student was brutally gang-raped and thrown out of a moving bus on December 16 while returning with her friend after watching a movie.

Later the girl succumbed to the deadly injuries in a Singapore hospital on December 29. The brutal incident had seen thousands of people taking it on to the streets compelling the government to take strict actions against violence on women.
