No more item songs on television – the decision was made by the government as such songs will be rated as adult content which cannot be aired on TV. Such movies if shown on TV will have the song taken off from now onwards.
The Censor Board has already directed all of its regional offices and members of the body to give ‘A’ certificate to movies with item songs, as told by the board to the government. "These songs, thus, would not be allowed to be telecast on television as only (a maximum of) 'UA' rated content is allowed on television," a statement by the Censor board said.
The immediate effect was part of the Censor board’s move to keep an eye on programmes (songs&videos) offending women. Meanwhile, Censor Board CEO Pankaja Thakur informed that the move has nothing to do with the Delhi rape incident.
Pankaja Thakur was quoted as saying, "In fact, the issue about item songs has been under discussion for quite some time now and we have received numerous representations from the general public and also from the National Commission for Women which recently wrote to us about two specific songs."
"Item songs are essentially adult content. We ourselves do not define what an item song is, but what we mean is that all those songs which are meant for adult consumption, either because of their lyrics or because of visuals, should be given adult certification," she added.
The board has also decided to ‘A’ rate movies with any kind of direct or indirect violence shown against women and cut the scenes off TV. However, a former member of the Censor Board expressed doubt in the new move saying a definition for “item songs” is yet to be made and filmmakers may make use of the confused state.
