IAF to induct its biggest aircraft 'C-17' today

New Delhi, Sept 2: In a measure to further strengthen its airlift capabilities, IAF will induct the biggest aircraft in inventory - 75-80 tonne C-17 Globemaster III heavy-lift transport aircraft into service today. The American C-17, with a capability to carry around 80 tonnes of load and around 150 fully geared troops, will be formally inducted by defence minister AK Antony at the Hindon airbase.

The aircraft, procured from the US at an expected deal over Rs 20,000 crore, will replace the Russian Il-76 as the biggest aircraft in the IAF inventory till now. The Il-76 could carry weight upto 40 tonnes.
The US will deliver seven more aircrafts to India by end of next year upon a deal signed for ten IAF air carriers.
