Caracas (Venezuela), March 5: Venezuela has begun seven days of public mourning after the death of President Hugo Chavez on March 5 (Tuesday) night. Chavez died at the age of 58 after fighting a long battle with cancer. Chavez died at the Venezuelan capital Caracas at a military hospital.
The death of the President was announced by Venezuela Vice President Nicolas Maduro. "We have just received the most tragic and awful information. At 4.25pm, President Hugo Chavez Frias died. "It's a moment of deep pain," Maduro announced through television. Maduro is most likely to succeed Chavez. Chavez will be given a state funeral on Friday, March 8.
He had revealed 21 months back that he had a tumor and was under treatment. He had an emergency surgery on December 11 last year and was not seen on TV for three months since then. Chavez led the country for 13 years since 1999.
Many world leaders condoled the death of Hugo Chavez. US President Barack Obama said, "At this challenging time of President Hugo Chávez's passing, the United States reaffirms its support for the Venezuelan people and its interest in developing a constructive relationship with the Venezuelan government. As Venezuela begins a new chapter in its history, the US remains committed to policies that promote democratic principles, the rule of law and respect for human rights."
