Jesse Ryder banned for failing dope test

New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder has been banned from international cricket for testing positive in a dope test for banned stimulants. Ryder tested positive for 1-Phenylbutan-2-amine (PBA) and N, alphadiethyl-benzeneethanamine (DEBEA) which he claimed he took in a supplement to reduce weight.

Both the stimulants are banned in competition. The 29-year-old batsman was handed a provisional suspension on April 19, with the hearing in his case not taking place until August 9. The ban will be continued till October 19.
Though the offence could invite a 2-year ban, Ryder was only given a 6-month term as the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand accepted that the batsman had no intention to cheat on the board. Meanwhile, Ryder said that he was "devastated" by his situation.
"I've never taken drugs and to be in this situation distresses me greatly. I simply took the supplement alongside a training programme I was completing to help me lose weight.
"Whilst everyone is aware of my well documented battles with alcohol, it's important for me to state that I abhor drug use of any kind, both recreational and performance-enhancing in sport," he said.
Ryder has already had a turbulent career this year with the batsman being subject to a vicious assault outside a Christchurch bar causing him critical head injuries. The batsman has struggled alcohol related problems and disciplinary issues throughout his career.
