Under-17 FIFA world cup: Kerala shows keen interest; bid to be considered in Dec

Thiruvananthapuram, July 25: India’s bid for the Under-17 football World Cup in 2017 will be considered by Fifa only in December. However, Kerala has already shown keen interest in co-hosting the 2017 U-17 football world cup.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told reporters after the cabinet meeting that the government will sign an MoU with the Union Sports Ministry and the other guarantee documents required as per Fifa guidelines, to conduct the mega event. “The government had offered its wholehearted support last year, but today the CM signed the MoUs. The KFA will pass it to the AIFF and it will then be submitted by the government. Now we are officially in the game,“ said Kerala Football Association (KFA) secretary Anil Kumar.
In order to hold this celebrations alive, India has to beat other countries which are in the bid including South Africa, Republic of Ireland, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan with a successful bid. However, the final decision rests in the hands of the FIFA executive committee.
Other cities like Mumbai, Goa, Bengaluru, New Delhi and Kolkata are also likely to be venues of this mega event. Meanwhile, the KFA is all set to start grassroot development programme at 140 centres in Kerala by next month.
