Micromax, Karbonn outsell Apple, Samsung in India

The recent International Data Corporation (IDC) report states that Indian smartphone makers Micromax and Karbonn have got higher market share in the Indian smartphone market than International brands Samsung and Apple combined together in the Q2 of 2013. This trend shows the demand for affordable smartphones in growing markets like India and China.

About 46 million units were shipped by these Indian smartphone makers compared to 35 million unit by Samsung and Apple combined together. "Aside from the top-tier international brands or Chinese brands that also ship globally like Huawei and ZTE, there is also a rising segment of homegrown brands, which as a group have been steadily rising in shipments and prominence," IDC stated in its latest report.

"In emerging markets like China and India, IDC has seen many local competitors spring up, but only in the last few quarters have we seen them aggressively scale up, competitive on both price and hardware specs like bigger screens. We are now hitting a place where there are Smartphones for every price point, where the masses will benefit from the slew of players bringing in more options," said IDC in the report on mobile shipments.

Micromax, Karbonn, Lava, Maxx and Intex are the top selling Indian brands while K-Touch, Coolpad, Glonee, Xiaomi and OPPO dominate in China. However, Samsung holds the highest market share in the Indian market with 24 percent followed by Nokia, Micromax and Karbonn. Meanwhile, Apple has been kicked out from the top five due to the high demand of these smartphones.
