Samsung beats Apple, becomes most profitable handset maker

South Korean smartphone maker Samsung became the most profitable mobile maker in the world for the current year (second quarter) beating Apple, said a report by Strategy Analytics. "Samsung became the world's most profitable handset vendor in Q2, 2013. Apple slipped into second position, as margins have been hit by lacklustre iPhone 5 volumes and tougher competition in China," said the report.

For the last four years, from 2009 Q3 to 2013 Q1, Apple was the most profitable mobile handset maker, but in current quarter, Samsung overtook its rival for the first time in four years. Apple faced tough competition in China and lost market share in iPhone5 sales.
"We estimate Samsung's operating profit for its handset division stood at USD 5.2 billion in the second quarter of 2013. Samsung overtook Apple for the first time, which recorded an estimated iPhone operating profit of USD 4.6 billion.
"Apple's profit margin for its handset division has been fading recently due to lacklustre iPhone 5 volumes and tougher competition from rivals. Samsung is performing well in the US market, while Huawei, ZTE and other local brands are growing vigorously in China," the report adds.
According to Strategy Analytics report, in the second quarter, about 386 million units of handsets were shipped globally. Among that, Samsung got the first place in terms of sales.
Samsung got 107 million units of global shipments which give 27.7 per cent share, Nokia holds the second place with 61.1 million units while 15.8 per cent share followed by Apple  with 31.2 million units in second quarter of 2013.
