Samsung beats Nokia, becomes No 1 mobile phone company in India

South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung became the top selling mobile phone company in India breaking Nokia's dominance for a decade in the country,  latest data released by industry magazine Voice & Data said. Samsung, reeling high sales on Galaxy smart phone sales, is now the clear market leader with 31.5% market share for the fiscal year 2012/13.

Meanwhile, Nokia has been pushed back to the second spot with a market share of 27.2%, the survey said. Indian brand Micromax grabbed the third spot with a market share of 8.7%.

Another Indian mobile phone maker, Karbonn took the fourth place (6.4% share) while international brands Apple (3.6%), HTC (3.3%) and BlackBerry (3.1%) followed. "Samsung's rise in the Indian market is attributed to its rich product portfolio (it has phones costing between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 50,000) that cater to customers of all budget categories," the survey said.

A spokesperson for Nokia commented, "We are in transition and are executing our strategy with urgency and at a new clock speed, even while operating in a fierce and fast-moving industry. We are happy with the progress we are making."
